Right at the time that I got in Manila, my sister and her boyfriend had kept on raving about going to Salcedo Market on Saturday. They said it has stalls serving food from different countries. And when I heard them said the words food and cheap.
That was it.
They got me!
It was already a bit late when we got there. Opening from 7am and closing at 2pm, getting there at 11am, isn't really much of a big deal, since there is always a crowd and it wouldn't thin out until closing time. It's interesting to look at the crowd in the market. Different races, people bringing their own pets, middle-aged women chitchatting with their 'amigas', and you know, this market isn't your regular everyday market. I must say that it's a bit posh.
Checking the food is a bit unnerving for first timers like me. It's always a battle whether to ask whoever's there on the stall about almost everything they're serving, or just to take a leap and order whichever looks appealing. I had my eyes on Moroccan and Indian cuisine because I had a growing interest on spicy food, right from the time that I experienced it in Malaysia.
Let me draw your attention to the picture above. They're serving "hamburgers" which use mushroom instead of meat in patties. So their burger is sure is healthy. Too bad I didn't get to taste it, but judging from how my sister devoured it --It seemed damn delicious! And oh, the people behind the table? They just happened to be the brains and brawns of Ministry of Mushroom-- Marco Lobregat and another equally-gorgeous lad. No wonder two customers had their pictures taken with him. I wish I had, but then I was just too shy. What a shame!
And it's a bit surprising that the food that they're serving, whether local or non local, are very affordable. Even cheaper if you compared it with the ones at the mall. Prices would range from Php30 to Php250 something, of course depends on the amount and the kind.
My sister got this Thai cod fish salad for Php95 |
I got a Moroccan pita (Php35) and lentil curry(Php75). |
My Indian curry snack (Php50). |
One thing with spicy food is that it's really tasty that one piece of pita was it for me. I was already full. I wonder how many calories does one pita bread contain, hopefully lower than a cup of rice.
Happy tummy. Happy wallet. Happy eyes. Happy-o-meter was definitely scoring 10! Now we were off to Greenbelt to watch Expendables 2. How we got there? We walked, of course!
Mornings in Makati is just too lovely, you don't want to miss it by riding a taxi!
