Saved by an Unsung Hero

Share
It was almost 8 in the morning, as I headed out of the hotel gate with the back beach being my destination in mind.  After few questions from the receptionists and the guard, I hopped on the motorcycle and took a ride towards Tambisaan beach.

When I got there, I was pleased to see that there was no one around except for some maintenance staff raking off some woods, and roots, and anything that makes the beach look "dirty".   I immediately spread my mat and positioned myself near this surfboard with 20-something coconut fruits laying neatly on it.

After few minutes or so, I was joined by the owner of the board, and I just naturally ordered a coconut from him.

Everything seemed perfect - sipping a freshly opened coconut in a beach which I have for myself.
At the same time, I felt greedy. What did I do to deserve all these?  But something tells me to just take it all in.  Sometimes I have to remind myself to be open to God's blessings and know that I am worthy somehow and despite of.

Our conversation just flowed very easily.  He started talking about a time where a Korean tourist was drowning while snorkeling at sea nearby.  Seeing that, he pushed his coconuts aside making space on the board for the struggling tourist to hang on.  After putting him to safety, and all the thank yous were said, he one-by-one gathered his coconuts which by then were floating far, far apart.  He returned to selling after that like he used to in every given day, but of course, it wasn't really any usual day.

After sharing his stories and noticing that there were already a couple of boats at sea, he excused himself and rowed his way to start selling.  Before I could no longer see him, I grabbed my camera and took a picture of this unsung hero once more.
