How Are You Mr. Immigration Sir?

Have you experienced lining up for immigration, feeling guilty as hell for no particular reason?  Well I have.

Immigration Blues

It was my first time to go to another country and to do that I knew I had to pass through immigration. I've heard tons of stories about it- most of which were bad.  I heard that they could be very superficial, so anyone who looks like a terrorist, whore, or drug dealer could get into serious trouble.  If these guys smell something fishy, you would be interrogated, or worse, you'll be asked to go to the immigration office for more torture.

My Friend's Immigration Nightmare

A week before leaving for Malaysia, my friend who just came home from Hongkong told me her story- well more like her nightmare.  She was questioned, fried and a bit humiliated for not having the needed documents, so she had to secure everything there.  Finally the immigration let her go and let her catch her plane which was just about ready to take off.  So she ran barefooted and that was it.  The thought of that happening to me, frightened me that my focus was just to be able to secure all possible documents that might be asked of me.  It was emotionally stressful -yes.  And even after securing all those, it didn't really eliminate my stress, only consolation was that my anxiety decreased a tad bit.

My Time Has Come

Lining up for immigration in Manila was really nerve-wracking. As I was doing so for the flight going to KL, I've witnessed a couple of girls trying to explain to the immigration officer their purpose of travel .  And after a few seconds, their passports were stamped!  That fast! I figured, it wasn't really that bad. I have a complete set of documents so everything should be alright, reassuring myself with this fact every minute.  Now my turn.  I greeted the officer with a faint smile and submitted my documents to him.  After 5 seconds, he said, "now I could produce these documents if I wish to".  I felt choked.  I said, "I have some other docs too, if you would want to check here it is".  After glancing at the papers for a few seconds, he then stamped my passport.  That was it.  I was off the hook! Challenge # 1 was over.  Now, one more barricade to go: the immigration in KL.

Facing Immigration Officer in KL

Upon stepping on the grounds of KL, it felt really surreal.  Was I really in another country?  But that trail of thought ceased when the thought of immigration shot passed my brain.  Here I go again.  I found myself lining up for immigration.  This time I was joined with people from different races: koreans, americans, french, indians and a lot more.  There were a group of korean ladies in front of me.  They were dressed as if they were actresses, one girl even had a bouquet of flowers with her.  My heart started to pound really hard when 2 of these girls were asked to go to the office.  Oh gosh!

So it was my turn, I gave the officer a very heavy-hearted smile, though I greeted him as cheerful as I possibly could.  He just stared at me seriously with keen eyes, ready to detect anything fishy.  My heartbeat was like a galloping horse by now.  He said, you going to KL alone huh? whilst checking my documents and staring at me suspiciously.  Told him my reasons, and then just like that, he stamped my passport.  Only until then was I  able to breath normally.

St. Paul Church: Stunning Sunset Spot

Some tourists on their way up the hill towards St. Paul Church, Melaka.

Sunset at St. Paul Church

It's best that you time your itinerary wisely, making sure that after going around Melaka, you head your way uphill to check the sunset.  Best sunset spot in town is at a hilltop where St. Peter Church is found.  It's not much of a climb, well it could get tiring after having gone around town.  I however got tired from all the walking, which what we had been doing since 10am in the morning.

But it's ok because by the time we got there, the view was really worth it.  The church itself is nothing but a skeletal structure.  Only huge stone slabs could be found and a statue of St. Peter perched in front of it.

Sunset Watching

Find a good spot.  For us, we head halfway down the hill and made a seat out of protruding hard soil. It was comfortable enough for us to stay for minutes and enjoy the breathtaking scene of the sunset of Melaka.  My friend and I didn't talk that much.  Well we did, initially.  After that we just stared at the sunset most of the time.  We could not really talk a lot anymore and ignore that beautiful sight in front of us.  I just stared at it quiet and happy.  For me, it was enough.

Romantic Melaka River Cruise

After walking around town, we were a bit exhausted but we were still excited to end the night with a river cruise. This is open from 9:30 to 11:30pm, but we decided to take it at night since it's best to see Melaka with all its beautiful evening lights.

When we got there, the counter was still close since the batch of boats were still doing a course, so we needed to wait for awhile which wasn't at all bad.  There were benches alongside the river and big trees all lined up.  Weird thing is that there are hundreds of bats hanging on these big old trees, so you have to watch out for guanos falling on you whenever you try to walk under these "bat trees".

Melaka: UNESCO Heritage

Red Buildings in Melaka town.

Stadthuys- the Red Buildings in Melaka

Stadthuys is located at the center of the city.  Surrounding this are drivers which will take you to different tourist sites, but will charge you around RM100 for their service - a bit expensive for backpackers.  Besides it's not really practical since you could spend the entire day walking around and already covering the important areas in Melaka.

First thing you could do is probably what tourists like us do: take pictures.  The buildings are interestingly different since these are painted red.  It's said to be the oldest Dutch building in the east and is a reproduction of Frisian towns of Hoorn in Netherlands that existed in 1420 to 1796.

Me checking some articles in a jonker near stadhuys.
There are a lot of things to see in the Stadthuys or town hall.  There's a grand fountain smacked in the middle of it.  I've read in reviews that you could take pictures of yourself with a big snake for RM10.  But when we went there, there wasn't any.  So we headed to the museum.  They charge RM5 for adults and RM3 for children.

In the museum, you'll get to see different articles which are remains of the Baba Nonya culture.  There are clothes, jars, swords, housewares and the likes.

I observed that the designs aren't much different from the Philippine's designs particularly with the Muslim culture.  Come to think of it, Muslims probably have a general artistic taste that are alike in many countries.

For a visitor like me, it's best to submerge yourself to the culture in Melaka by visiting Stadthuys first.  This will give you a great degree of understanding and appreciation of the other areas and spots which you will visit next.
